Yesterday I received this comment from an anonymous author. I thought it would be interesting to discuss and maybe get some other opinions.
“Tripe, all of it. God awful. I don’t know how you justify your existence as an artist. Do the world and yourself a favor and adopt a sense of self criticism. Becoming an artist is a long and arduous process, going to OCAD and and having good looking friends does not make you an artist. I suggest you actually listen to your professors and come to understand how to initially conceive an idea and then work through it in a series of logical steps, analyzing your findings as you go along. Making a bubble gum version of Pollock is not going to get you anywhere, not even in the insignificant art scene of Toronto. Pollock took decades to achieve the formal innovations he is known for. I am not telling you to give up, or that it’s hopeless, just take your life and your work a little more seriously. Just a thought from an equally insignificant person.”
Dear unknown author,
Thank you for taking an interest in my work. From reading your comment I gather that you think I am a superficial and possibly narcissistic person. Good. Keep thinking that.
This ‘artist’ persona you’ve suggested that I adopt is so irrelevant to why I create in the first place. I don’t see why I should consciously self-create myself as an artist. I am an artist and I always have been. Art isn’t logical and god forbid mine should ever be – even if it means it wont “get me to places.”
I appreciate that you think my friends are beautiful. They are more beautiful inside than they are out. They make me laugh, dance and forget about the world so naturally they would be the focus of my photography and art. Hanging out with them doesn’t make me an artist and I think you are superficial for accusing me for it. You chose to equate good-looking people with “art”. I’m just enjoying myself and I refuse to take life seriously. That would be my greatest downfall.
This “equally insignificant person” seems to me like someone who desperately wishes they were able to create something… anything.. It must be really sad to sit and wallow in self pity in front of a computer whilst leaving negative comments about a stranger’s beautiful creations. I hope you find some source of inspiration and creativity in your obviously mundane existence. There is nothing logical about art and comments like yours just go to show how uneducated you are on the topic.
Happy Holidays “equally insignificant person”. I hope you have a holiday that doesn’t involve your computer and your 5 cats!
Cheers
K first of all Mark I think its clear to us all that this art critic spends a lot of time chilling on your website and masturbating to all your beautiful friends. Im sorry that you happen to be surrounded by beautiful people and were once yourself a part of BPC (ahahaha) but that doesnt take away from your talent.
And if this bitter creature is such a big “self criticism” enthusiast, then I think we’d all like to see what he/she/it can do… until then sit back and let the big boys play.
Im really proud of you btw.
